Our History

The Burford Saddle Club would not exist without the generous support of the Burford community. The idea to start a saddle club came from the need to repair the show ring fences at the Burford fair grounds in 2015.  The show rings were only used twice a year during fair time and it was not economical to invest into fence repairs for such a short time. However, if the horse rings were to be used all summer, repairing the fences made sense.

Well! A meeting was held with a handful of horse people, and thanks to Bill Johnston who ran the story in the Burford Times, donations started pouring in. Butch and Elaine Clare generously offered to finance and take charge of the repairs. The Burford Agricultural Society allowed the Burford Saddle Club to use the grounds free of charge for our first four years of operation. Out of the blue, County Council called us, saying they saw the article in the paper, and donated $500. The local feed store, Sinden Feed, bought us timers and poles for Gaming and the local LaFarge office donated the barrels. We found a company that makes ribbons by hand, employing individuals who require support.

We are a grassroots Club where you can show with neat, if not fancy, tack and apparel. We have no age limit on Lead Line and Novice classes, which allows anyone who is starting in the sport or individuals who require support to show.  Because of the continuous generosity of our sponsors, we aim to run our club at an affordable cost. Volunteers and participants are just as important as sponsors. We could not exist without them. Our Board of Directors is made of volunteers who strive to listen to our members and provide shows that are fun, safe and affordable.
